Common Questions on Portable Air Conditioners

I leased a portable unit--What do I need to remember

1-2 Ton Units in the Middle

Three things to remember

  1. Make sure to empty water condensate tank at bottom
  2. Make sure exhaust ductwork is not blocked
  3. Make sure side filters don't get clogged or blocked by clothes, walls

Another video on venting warm Air

Vent air in High Ceiling Room

You want to cool your people but still get warm air out of the room. Even high ceilings can be conquered with some concrete forms and layflat duct.

In this video our ceilings are around 20' high. You can see that's there is plenty of static pressure to get the warm air out through the vent. Takes some work and a tall ladder or lift but it's doable.

Inside Evaporative Cooler
The basic premise is simple. Pour water into media that absorbs water and is able to have air pulled through it. On the other side your airstream is moisture laden, when it hits the skin the evaporation causes a cooling effect on a person.

How Much..Cooling..?? Depends on humidity levels but anywhere from 10-15 degrees cooler than the ambient air.

Applications are big open areas that don't mind moisture put into air...Livestock/Barns, open warehouses, outdoor events etc. PLUS, they are usually less expensive that air conditioners and require just a plug in for electrical needs.

Take a look at the video and consider an evaporative cooler. It might help keep your cool this Summer.

Portable air conditioners--Landlord’s Secret Weapon

“I just can’t afford to make all my tenants happy during the summer”., jeff said..

I knew the scenario all too well, Jeff owned a 7 story older office building in downtown Indianapolis. As the summer approached Jeff was becoming more anxious as he waited for the first phone calls from tenants that were too hot with no way to fix it.

You see Jeff’s building was old, older building design didn’t allow for cooling. His last estimate on just a minimal HVAC makeover was close to 2 million dollars. That estimate didn’t include the possible asbestos...plus the mess, the time, etc. etc. He knew a complete makeover could easily bankrupt him.

His solution is what I call a the tenant control cooling solution. Jeff gives me a call late Spring and we deliver and set up and series of small portable air conditioners. Now the tenant has personal control over his own cooling systems. Want it cooler..?? Turn the thermostat down. Have extra people in the conference room..?? Bring in a unit and keep these extra visitors cool and efficient.

How does Jeff feel about it..? “

“Look, it’s a cost I’d rather not do but this option costs me less than 1% of doing a whole new system. And..my tenants are happy that they can control their own thermostat. If I keep them happy, they stay in my building.”

What about you.? Have some problem rooms or tenants that are constantly complaining about the heat.? Give them some control of their own. Never hurts to get an idea of the amount, size and budget for temporary cooling systems.

Call toll free 800.972.6600 or go to my local web site or email me joe.large@atlassales.com See if we might have your secret for satisifed tenants in my warehouse..right now. Call before you get those complaints.

Server Rooms--Portable Cooling Economics

Your server room is getting warm, check that, in the summertime it’s downright hot. You’ve brought in a few mechanical contractors and asked them about a 5 ton backup system to be available when the present cooling won’t keep up or worse yet, goes out.

Installed tonnage in existing server room, depending on building construction and existing power/ductwork will run from $4500-$6000 an installed ton. Therefore;

Your backup system runs from $22,000-$30,000 plus you have some major moving of existing racks and systems while work is being done.

So let’s review the scope and the numbers:

1. “back up system” for 5 tons is between 22-30,000
2. Doesn’t include IT work on moving racks, systems
3. Will need 8-10 working days to make all the changes
4. Unit is dedicated to this room alone, no cooling anywhere else
5. Space in tight room for dedicated cooling, no flexibility

Portable Air Conditioners

What about portable air conditioners? Their review of scope and results;

1. Initial pricing for complete 5 Ton unit $7500-11,500
2. No moving racks, or systems
3. No downtime for remodeling, just roll into room
4. Use in other areas of building, roll into area that needs cooling
5. Might be able to expense, take with you when you move

So next time you need additional cooling for your server room, the answer might be rolling right at you. Both economics and flexibility may determine that portable air conditioners is the right solution for your problem. What’s the next Step..??

Have new exterior sign on the shop now. Feel like a real business now. Guess it's my Generation X background that I still find some type of "continuity" with a physical sign.

But I'm slowly learning it's the signs you produce on your web site and search are the ones that really matter. But still, over 200 thousand people see this sign per day..!!

Keeping Beer Cold has a new Meaning

Near eastside brewery needed help. The early heat spell in March left their chillers working overtime to keep the mash cool. The chillers needed some help and the warm March air wasn't helping.

Take a look at this video on how we kept their Beer process cool and producing.

Reminded me that not just people and rooms need to be cool. Many processes depend on the air being just right for things to be made on a regular basis.

Thanks for reading and for goodness sake....Keep Cool!!

We've done a lot of emergency cooling. I know most work we do is an emergency in that people want to be cool RIGHT NOW..but also consider emergency cooling when vandals rip copper and aluminum from roof top units!!..

It's getting to be a real growing trend. Just did a project today on a 1800 s.f. upscale beauty salon comes in and no cooling. None for them and six other tenants in shopping center.

Here's a video I did showing some details of the job.

The message today. Watch your equipment. You may want to talk to your HVAC contractor on locks on your equipment or ways to discourage random entry on the roof. There are no easy fixes.

If you need emergency cooling or spot coolers call or email me. Joe Large.. 317.430.6674 or joe.large@atlassales.com

Have a great week and for goodness sake, Keep Cool.
